Novels: Bless the Beasts and Children by Glendon Swarthout
Animal Farm by George Orwell

You will be given copies of these novels.

Essays: 1. In one paragraph explain your personal meaning of friendship.
Include an introductory sentence and a conclusion.

2. After reading Bless the Beasts and Children, you will write
a five-paragraph essay. Choose one of the six campers and
write a character sketch on him. The first paragraph will be the introduction; the last paragraph will be the conclusion. In the body of the essay, one paragraph will be about his physical description, one paragraph will be about his psychological problems, and one paragraph will have the examples of behaviors. In your conclusion, be sure to tell how the boy changed by the end of the novel.

3. After reading Animal Farm, you will write a five-paragraph essay. You will identify and compare Leon Trotsky, V.I. Lenin, and Joseph Stalin to three of the characters from the novel. (You will have to do a little research beforehand.) The first paragraph will be the introduction; the last paragraph will be the conclusion. There will be one paragraph for each of the men and their counterparts from the novel.


Please double-space your written or typed essays. Be sure to proofread for grammatical, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation errors.
Bring in the books and the essays with you the first day of school in August.
