Reading Outside the Book

During summer vacation, let your child explore ways to think outside the book. This doesn’t mean taking a break from reading. There are many ways to read beyond books. Focus on the interests that your child may already have. If your child loves soccer, provide ways for him/her to learn more about this sport through articles, catalogues, brochures, and tip sheets. Here are some other methods to keep your child reading outside the book!

*Cookbooks—Cooking is a great opportunity to get kids reading. Let your child pick out recipes that they would like to try this summer. You can make the meals together as a family activity.

*Comic books—The illustrations and fun topics should keep your child interested this summer.

*Instructions—Summer is a time for projects. Allow your child to read the instructions and help you go step by step on the project.

*Food and product labels—Ask your child to read the suntan lotion bottle, bug spray, pop can, or anything else that is lying around. They will learn more about what they are putting in or on their bodies.
