The Conneaut district used $44 million in state aid to construct two new elementary schools, a new middle school, and to   renovate  Conneaut High School. The money was  brought to the 2,525-student Conneaut School District through the Ohio School FacilitiesCommission. The commission makes money available to renovate and replace aging schools. Typically thelocal district is asked to put up matching funds.
Recommendations to replace Conneaut's existing schools came after inspectors surveyed the buildings. A tax levey passed in 1999 with 70 percent of the vote to provide matching funds for Conneaut's program. Such a mandate was the largest ever seen in Conneaut for a school levy.
